WVBA 16-Shannon win 2010 16 Open Gold Division Title
SEATTLE, WA--June 18, 2010
2010 Tournament Summary
Thank you to all of the teams, parents, coaches and players that participated in the 2010 Emerald City Classic Invitational. We had some difficult weather, but everyone maintained a great spirits. The winners of all gold divisions are listed below as well as the All-tournament team selections and the three winners of the Candis Carter Inspiration Award.

We would like to thank all of the WVBA parent and family volunteers, as well as the UW Air Force ROTC detachment led by the incomparable 2nd Lieutenant Jillian Morris. Tournament Czar Jim Clavadetscher, through his amazing volunteer matrix, kept everyone flowing to work with smiles on their faces. Doug Scherer kept us rocking at his famous barbecue while the lovely Julie and Becky Scherer fulfilled the wishes of all of our guests at the apparel concession stand at Dempsey.

Monster was again an incredible title sponsor and this support was supplemented by a variety of quality companies that kept us fed and clothed as well as cared for. The Bastyr University Sports Medicine Club volunteers were amazing. Thank you to all sponsors for making our event such a success.

Candis Carter Inspiration Award
We would like to congratulate the winners of the 2010 Candis Carter Inspiration Award. These three players were selected from the entire field of over 2,000 players to receive this honor. These ladies were recognized for their ability to extend rallies rather than end them, and in doing so inspire their teammates and fans. The 2010 Candis Carter Inspiration Award winners:

Emily Stoppler (PSVBA 14)
Abby Lewis (Rose City 16 Blk)
Hannah Carle (Lake Tapps 17)

Mini-Volleyball Division
For the second year in a row we hosted a demonstration tournament of Mini-Volleyball in 2010. This variation of volleyball was played on a court measuring 20' x 20' with the net height set at 5'-6". There were four players on at a time and the players rotated as soon as they sent the ball across the net. If there were players off the court, they rotated onto the court as their team sent the ball across the net. Play was initiated by the coaches alternating free balls to each side.

The biggest change to full-sized volleyball rules was to allow the players to catch the first two of three contacts in order to emphasize hitting and blocking, which there was plenty of. We played the first two sets to 15 with a deciding set to 7. Matches were scheduled every 20 minutes.

We ran two 3-team pools and then a single elimination bracket. We crowned a champion and had the entire tournament complete within 4 hours using just one court.

Congratulations to the winners of the mini-volleyball division, Team 3! This team consisted of Samantha Drechsel, Claire Gorman, Elizabeth Su, and Rebecca Owen.
