Welcome to the 2007 WVBA International Player Journal Page

Here we will be publishing our player journals throughout the trip. Each player will be writing about their experience during their day. Below is the first journal entry, from Tara Kurack on her experience of getting down to South America...enjoy

Getting there, by Tara Kurack
July 17-19, 2007

Today I woke up at 3:15AM and the trip officially began with a stop at Albertson's to get Anna a birthday card for her 18th birthday and of course, a Red Bull. My mom and I arrived to the United ticket counter at SeaTac nearly on time at 5:03AM and were greeted with half closed eyes from all the girls and Dave Weitl in a Hawaiian print shirt, looking extra touristy.

After a slight "incident" at security involving Dave Morehouse being frisked and pictures being taken, our flight left Seattle at 7AM and we were to our gate at LAX by about 9:45. We had a couple hours to burn until our next flight so most of us just ate at McDonald's. The longest flight of the trip was next and no one was too anxious to get on the plane.

We left LAX on LAN Peru flight #605 at 1:25PM and flew straight for eight hours and twenty five minutes arriving in Lima, Peru at 9:50PM Seattle time but after the time switch it was 11:50PM in Lima. In Lima we only had one hour till our next four and a half hour flight to Sao Paulo. We went to the bathroom and Dave bought himself a little Peruvian stuffed llama that became his new best friend.

Our next flight left at around 1AM local time and lasted around four and a half hours. We were served egg omelets and we all had personal televisions at our seats. We arrived in Sao Paulo at around eight AM (that's adding a two hour time change).

When we landed in Sao Paulo we gathered our bags and then met our new friend Gelson, from DPF Sports of Sao Paulo, who would serve as our tour guide for the next two days in Brazil. We went to the money exchange and I exchanged 570 American dollars for around 1,014 Brasilian Reis. We got some food and then had took a bus to the domestic airport in Sao Paulo where we drove by the building that was damaged in the airplane crash that happened there.

We arrived to the other airport to find out that our flight to Rio had been cancelled. We rescheduled and left around 3:15 after a slight flight delay. We landed in beautiful Rio at around 4:15 and immediately gathered our luggage and took our bus to Corcovado (the large statue of Christ). We took the half hour train ride up at around sun down and were given breath-taking glimpses of Rio from above. When we finally go to the very top we were able to stand still and take many pictures of all the beautiful angles and places that were visual from the top. We then of course took many pictures of the statue and everything else. We all were pretty rushed though because it was freezing! Lots of wind and it was very chilly.

We took the train back down and then drove a few minutes to a pizza buffet where we each paid 10 reais for all you can eat pizza. All different types of pizza. Cheese, chicken and cheese, margarita (tomato, basil, cheese), French Fry Pizza, Salmon Pizza, Sausage Pizza, Pepperoni, Romeo and Juliet (guava and cheese). And then for dessert we had desert pizzas: chocolate and coconut, banana and cinnamon, strawberry and chocolate and probably more that I can't remember. And many of us drank Guarana which is a fruity soda that everyone loved! We then hopped on to a two hour bus ride to our final destination for the next couple days of Buzios.

It was an extremely bumpy ride but I was lucky to sleep on the bus most the time. When we pulled up to the house we were all in awe because through the front entrance we could all see the blue glimmer of a pool. We all quickly got out of the bus and went into the house to see all there was! The house is like an open air house with many windows and open areas. It feels like you are always outside. It is like a classic old home with old wood and beautiful antiques with some modern couches and things. After a few of the girls took a swim we all unpacked into our rooms and went to sleep! It took almost two days to arrive but it was well worth the wait to arrive at such a beautiful home.
