I began coaching volleyball after the sun set on my playing days. After playing in the USVBA club circuit around Seattle for a few years my lower back didn't allow me to play a complete tournament day. I was in my office one day back in 1993 when one of my officemates informed me that he had just accepted a volunteer coaching job for his daughter's 8th-grade volleyball team. He asked me if I'd be willing to put on a clinic at one of the practices since I actually played and he knew very little about volleyball. Reluctantly I agreed but I remained skeptical. After that first night I decided to help coach the team for the rest of the season. I found myself scratching out plays in my office instead of doing the work I had piling up and that is when I realized I was hooked. The following year I was asked by one of the parents from the 8th-grade team if I would be interested in coaching at the high school since they didn't have a JV coach yet. I decided to interview with the head coach, got the job, and coached there for three years. After the first season I found out about junior club ball and began coaching at Northwest Juniors. I coached there for two years taking their 16s team to a top-20 finish at the Volleyball Festival. In 1997 I coached the 17 Reign team at Rain City where we were Regional Champions and undefeated. The next summer I talked Raynani Reinhardt into coming out of retirement and starting up Seattle Juniors, along Jim Cartisser. We decided to change the name to Washington Volleyball Academy in the summer of 1998 and with the help of Diane Flick launched the club under its current name the following year.

"I believe learning occurs for the players under my direction primarily through their own discovery and experience rather than through words or pictures. The reason I coach is to provide an opportunity for players to learn lessons about themselves, about others, and about life through the game of volleyball."
