Spent the morning on the Wynoochee with nothing to show for it. On the way home we hit the Skookumchuck, it was also very low but I was surprised to see a little bit of color. Drifted eggs with no weight below the gravel pit. I had a solid strike on about my 15th cast. When I set the hook my 6 lb. f-carbon snapped like button thread, I guess I tied a lousy knot (I know that's hard to believe!). Re-tied and moved up to the next slot. Made my first cast up under a down tree and wham !!! FISH ON !! 5 seconds later FISH OFF ! #$%^&**! Fished for another hour or so with no luck. Saw enough to make me want to come back even with the low water. Maybe next time.

The Skook has an excellent Stonefly Hatch going on right now. Fished all day yesterday, right below the dam and caught and released probably anywhere from 20 to 30 'bows, All on Mickey Finn Streamers and Small, size 10 Olive Stimulators

Lots of rain the last couple of days. Skookumchuck was running 400CPS and rising. Water was green, with 2 to 3 ft. of visibility at best. The water was a warm 47. Only fish I caught was a small Cutthroat. Did see one dark spawned out Steely under the bridge and a bunch of small frys. A good sign for the year 2003-2004.

The river had began too rise with only a few inches of rain. Had to realease a wild 10 or so pounder steelhead. Darned silvers still managing to hit on various offerings. Water is dropping, 4 foot visibility. Spooky fish I guess!

First day to fish the Skookumchuck in 1999. I arrived at 10:00am to see high water everywhere. Probably 20 other anglers were spead out along the access road up to the dam. Most were plunking sand shrimp. I parked at the dam gate, and walked up to fish the first bend with fresh eggs, and a #10 corkie. No luck for an hour, until, I felt a stop on the line. Set the hook, and missed. I pulled in my line to find a couple of bright scales on the tip of my hook. Several friendly anglers around said the water rose two feet from Saturday. Spoke with two guys who each had caught a hatchery fish yesterday, and that's why they came back Sunday. Probably worth a shot if we get two days without rain. Good Luck.

Thanks to Mr. Fred for the following report:
I arrived at the Skookumchuck River late afternoon. The weather
was showery and a cold front had just arrived. Water conditions
were good about 2 foot visibility. I fished just below the Dam
boundary (near the old concrete bridge). A friend and I fished
there for about 4 hours. My partner lost a good fish and I got
a five-pound buck steelhead and had another fish on briefly. It
was my first Skookumchuck Steelhead. There were about a half dozen
others fishing, none took any fish home.
