Carbon River

Overview

The Carbon River flows from the Carbon glacier on Mt. Rainier down through the South Prairie - Orting valley into the Puyallup river just west of the town of Orting.
It boasts a strong run of fall chinook and coho salmon that peak during the month of October. Winter steelhead pass through this small river during the months of December and January and into the month of February. It also harbors a steady supply of Dolly Varden and Rainbow trout. White fish can also be plentiful in winter months.

Seen tons of silvers in the lower end of river. Tossed everything I could, including my rod, but could only get a few good hits. Fish heads littered the water so I suppose it was pretty hot earlier in the day. Happy to report the fishermen are doing a great job packing out their trash,at least where I was.

Fished the river just out of Orting ever day after work. Hooked eight fish and landed four of them. Timing was good since the river went out after Friday. All fish hooked on blue fox spinners, nothing works better.

I took my 2 sons, 12 and 15, out for some fishing on Fri. the 1st. My 12 year-old out fished us all by landing a 20-lb. king. I foul hooked and released a really bright 20 lber. I lost about 6 but had a great time. We then went out on the following Thursday and landed 2 nice 6/7 lb silvers. Green and orange corkie/yarn.

Monday hooked 2 landed 1 22-lb. king hen. Tuesday hooked and landed a 26-lb. king hen. I think the major run is not in yet. The rain over night will help. Fish down stream of the hatchery zoo you will earn your fish and have a better outing, I sure did. Tightlines.

Well, two guys I work with took me to a place that I had never been. We got there at first light. It was raining as always and pretty cold. The rver was really nice, the water was clear and you could smell the fish. We stayed close for a while. Then we split up but within eye contact. I spotted a small eddie and went for it and sure enough 2nd cast was a 7-lb. steelhead that looked like chrome, and one hell of a fight too. If you want one go to the Carbon River near Orting or anywhere nearby.

My buddy and I got a chance to get out and fish so we headed to the Carbon in Orting. The river was muddy, high, and fast. Out of shape. Since we were there we tried it anyway. Got a few bites and saw a few spent out coho swimming around. That's about it. It is time to go after lake fishing for us.

I decided to hit the carbon river for the 4th week in a row. It's just a little after 5:00am, the river was lit up by Glow in the dark corkies....44 lbs. and just 5 hours later, we returned home to smoke it for snacks. I really thought my first year salmon fishing would be slow after starting with a bright King on the 1st. But that's what makes this such a great state.

After reading all the fishing reports on the Carbon, I decided to take a trip down with my Dad. We hooked two kings and didn't land either one. I'm 15 years old and I read reports about these people down there and I wonder if when I'm grown up and want to fish if there will be any left. The garbage is real bad, just put it in your vest! A word of advice, don't bother with the crowd directly below the creek, they snag 95% of the fish they hook. Go down river to the bend with the rip rap. There are fish all the way through the tailout. Sometimes it is crowded but all but 2 of the people I've fished by have been nice (I've been down 6 times). One more thing if you get there after noon and you fish below the creek, don't expect to catch anything big, the crowd in the morning cleans that place out. Have fun fishing, maybe I'll see ya' down there.

To make a long story short, I hooked nine Kings and landed one. There are a lot of people, but believe me it's worth it. Hurry up before the run is over. P.S. No fishing above Voights Creek.

I fished the Carbon River on Sept 15, 1999. I got there at about 5:00AM and there weren't too many people. By 8:00AM it was a combat fishing experience, there were a lot of Kings caught most in the 15 to 20 pound range, but they were starting to get real dark in color. I also saw something I have never seen before, another fisherman foul hooked a nice King in the tail, myself and a friend helped get the hook out so he could release the fish, once we let the fish go it swam down stream in the shallow water and went right in front of another guy, he picked the fish up and smacked him in the head with a rock and took it home. Talk about poaching where are the Game Wardens when you need them?

Started out below the "combat hole" today, and once again located kings. Hooked and "long line released" 2 and landed 1. They were a little dark for me and I've already got some meat in the smoker and bbq'd some. (from opening day..very bright) Very good bbq'd by the way. (if not dark) The meat was firm and pink. Haven't hooked any silvers yet..heard of a few.
I still can't believe all the people that fish in the first hole below the creek. I'm glad however...that leaves some quiet water down below. Still seeing people keeping foul hooked fish. Where's the sport in that? I ran into a game warden down in Orting that day. He was on his way out there. He has a "secret lookout" to observe fishermen from a distance. He will take pictures of you retaining a foul hooked fish, take all of your fishing gear, and possibly walk you back to your car and take that too. If you're nice to him, he won't take you to jail. Nice guy...doing his job.
It also looks like a land fill down there. Pick up your trash people...pretty soon the state or private land owners will close it off for us..is that what you want? I also observed a guy killing and bleeding a huge king on the bike path by the bench! He just left it there to bleed all over the path for people to step in and ride through....dork.

Fished above & below treatment plant. Pretty slow, not many anglers & only saw about 5 fish roll! No hook-ups this time. Fished from 5:00pm till 8:00pm. Did talk to some anglers who reported many hook-ups the night before of Kings, Silvers & even a Humpy. I think we will see more Silvers real soon? Trying some catch & release on the Green tonight.

My neighbor and I went to the Carbon to fish on this last Saturday and Monday (Labor Day). I had never been to the Carbon so it was an adventure. On Saturday we arrived around noon and fished for several hours. We heard to the combat fishing upstream by the hatchery. We fished and just did not get any bites. The lower area was slow at least that was what everyone was saying. On Monday we arrived in Orting around sun-up. We fished the lower area again with no luck. After several hours we went upstream to see the crowd at the hatchery. They were lined up shoulder to shoulder as far as you could see. They were bringing in large kings and silvers. Some looked to be at least 30 pounds. We enjoyed the show watching these guys fish. Being inexperenced watching showed us alot. They all seemed to get along and work together when a fish was on. I am going back this weekend.

This report is short and sweet. The fish are in the Carbon thick. I was there 3 hours and hooked 8 and landed 3. Kept a 25-lb. hen for the eggs and a good meal. The fish are good color by the way. To all who dare to go, it is a zoo, but worth it. Just remember, everyone is there to catch fish. No sense in arguing with anybody down there. We were all beginners once too.

Amazing on number of fellow anglers who wereuup and on river these two days. Well over 150 people on bank. River has changed the crossing tree gone river changed route. Fish everywhere. Lines snapping bright fish coming out. After moving around found a good spot the rest was easy. Nothing under 30 lb. limited every day. In and out in 3 hours. It's the right set up. Eggs are not the ticket. Red/green/red corkies stacked with green yarn if that doesn't work, well?

We got on the water a little late, about 7:00 am and the water was pretty high and milky white. After about a half hour of seeing nothing, we finaly saw a fish touch the surface, a pretty nice one at that. About ten minutes later we saw another one roll. Finally, about an hour into it, I hooked one. Unfortunately after a short five minute fight it came off. So, there are fish in the river and they are bright. Because the water is so milky, any colors should work if you use a big glob of eggs.

River is very mucky still, even with the rain it will be a few days before the river clears. Even so last night at the Voights creek tresel I saw at least 15 kings leaving the river. They range from 12 to 20 lbs. Fishing pressure is quite heavy, with some spots looking like blue creek. The fish are pretty dark, silvers ought to be running heavy soon.

Saw quite a few fish being taken just below the hatchery creek Friday and Saturday, but since I like a little elbow room, I went down river about 1/2 mile and fished the gate hole. Caught about a 4lb silver around 6:00am, and saw one other silver caught about 30 minutes later and that was about it. Nobody seemed to be getting anything all day. Fish just seem to disappear today.

P.S. stopped by Soos Creek in Auburn on the way home this afternoon and saw a few fish in the water. Water is really low and clear right now so it was easy to see that 30+lbs big boy swimming in one hole. Only about 5 guys fishing the whole creek. Still pretty early and slow...

Had a good fishing trip today. I drove up to the little town of Orting. I parked at the Orting Grange and hiked in about a mile and waded across the river and hiked downstream and found a nice hole with only a few people. When I made the first cast, I had one on but it spit the hook, but then about 20 min. later... had another one "and I mean another one :)" I fought it for a half hour before I could tame him and yes, "oh yes" it was my biggest fish yet that I caught 37-1/2 incher a 40#. Well gotta go, lots of smok'n to do...

I fished back behind the Orting sewage treatment plant, both upstream and downstream with no luck. The water is very milky and visibility is about 3". It seems to me that the river is running a bit higher than I remember, considering that there hasn't been any rain for a long while. I saw one fish. I haven't heard of anyone taking anything, but it has only been open for salmon two days. I talked to the people at the Voight Creek hatchery last month and he told me that they got 15,000 silvers and 3,000 kings back last year. I wish I could give you all a better report, but that's fishing!

Arrived in the late afternoon to the usual opening day circus. Saw quite a few fish being hooked (snagged) near Voights Creek. Fished a couple of holes below there and managed to fair hook two and snag a couple of others.Kept one nice bright male around sixteen pounds. Lots of fish around along with lots of fisherman. Always a good place to see some very comical hookups and also some decent fish. Largest I saw went around thirty five pounds. Should be decent for a few more weeks.
